The goal of research and innovation activities on generic ICT technology addressed in Horizon 2020's pillar "Industrial Leadership" is to accelerate the development of the technologies and innovations that will support tomorrow's businesses and help innovative European SMEs to grow into world-leading companies. Emphasis is placed on research and innovation within areas with a strong industrial dimension, the so-called Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) which have a wide range of applications and thus enormous potential for increasing economic growth and generating jobs. One of the most central digital technologies covered by KETs is Photonics, which is particularly suitable for combining with other basic technologies. Thus, further specialization in Photonics can trigger greater opportunities for technological development than specialization in other KETs individually. Photonics research in Norway carries out poorly coordinated activities within many active groups at several universities, institutes and companies. In 2018, Norway is, unfortunately, still significantly underrepresented in the most important European Photonics forums. European Photonics research has experienced rapid growth in the last 10+ years and the number of Photonics supplier companies has grown tremendously, driven mainly by needs in the communications, automotive, aerospace and aerospace industries. With increased participation in flourishing European forums, we can facilitate rapid technology transfer and thereby trigger further growth and value creation in Norway as well.
