Broad expertise in understanding subsurface oil and gas reservoirs
The Subsurface flow laboratory group has broad expertise in understanding subsurface oil and gas reservoirs. The group consists of researchers and engineers with educational backgrounds in physics, chemistry, petroleum, and reservoir technology.
The group has competence mainly within oil production: improved oil recovery and enhanced oil recovery, gas production, water management, special core analyses (SCAL), CO2 utilization and storage (CCUS), hydrogen production, and future sustainable use of subsurface resources.
We are now using our expertise to solve challenges within the green shift.

We are currently researching and carrying out lab experiments in selected projects such as:
- National Center for subsurface understanding and sustainable reservoir utilization (NSC 2030, Petroleum Center hosted by University of Stavanger, RCN, and industry). Methods being studied as part of research projects in the NSC 2030 include tracers and tracing methods for utilization of the Norwegian continental shelf; hydrogen storage and back-production in porous media; Deepwater diversion for minimizing CO2 footprint and CO2 utilization.
- Northern Lights - developing the world’s first open-source CO2 transport and storage infrastructure.
- Transport, injection, and storage of CO2 (IPN-project) with NEMO Maritime AS
- ColdSpark (Horizon Europe-project): Methane cracking to usable hydrogen and carbon with plasma technology (Horizon Europe, 2022 – 2025)
- Fishbones post-acid stimulation in Carbonate reservoirs (Innovation Project (IPN) for the Industrial Sector with Fishbones and Simworx, Brazil
- Nanofluids for IOR and tracer technology
- Polymer injectivity and retention in porous media
