Per Pettersson har en doktorgrad i anvendt matematikk fra Stanford University og numerisk analyse fra Uppsala Universitet, begge finansiert av KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology). Pettersson driver med utvikling, analyse og implementasjon av matematiske metoder for usikkerhetskvantifisering, f.eks. polynomkaos, akselererte Monte Carlo-metoder og simulering av ekstreme hendelser. Anvendelsesområder inkluderer CO2-lagring, CFD, simulering av flom og forbrenning. Han har vært ansatt ved Uni Research og deretter NORCE siden 2014.
