Johan Olav Helland har PhD i petroleumsteknologi fra Universitetet i Stavanger (2005) og MSc i anvendt matematikk fra Universitetet i Bergen (2001). Hans forskningsinteresser er knyttet til modellering og simulering av transport og flerfasestrøm for utvinning og lagring i porøse medier. Han har utviklet numeriske metoder og poreskalamodeller for trefasestrøm som kan simulere fluidkonfigurasjon, kapillartrykk, hysterese, og komplekse grenseflatefenomen, direkte på segmenterte bilder av porestrukturen.
