Lav fødselsvekt: kontinuitet i omsorg i lokalsamfunnet i Sør-India

Lav fødselsvekt: kontinuitet i omsorg i lokalsamfunnet i Sør-India

The first 1000 days of life between pregnancy and the second year of life are important for the child’s development. In India, after the establishment of Sick Newborn Care Units (SNCU) with Kangaroo mother care (KMC) units, lactation counselors and breast milk banks, the survival of the preterm and low birth weight (LBW) babies have increased. However, the care of discharged babies in the community, including the practice of KMC and breastfeeding are not well documented and there is some evidence pointing to an inadequate care after discharge. This research project will assess the continuum of care for LBW infants after discharge from SNCU, Chengalpattu Medical Hospital, India. We will assess the mortality of these infants and the extent to which KMC and breastfeeding are practiced in the community. The study will also explore barriers and enablers of LBW care in the community. Results could lead to improved and cultural appropriate care in the community for LBW infants in the future.
