Caring, negotiation and cooperation in the field of familybased and municipal eldercare.

The aim of this study is to highlight factors, conditions and possibilities of significant when it comes to how families adjust when elderly family members are in need of help in their everyday life. The study also investigates how care work and cooperation is organized and practiced in the field between elderly living at home, their family, and different parts of the municipal eldercare system.

Empirical data is gathered through research conversation and observations in the home of a selected sample of elderly, and significant family members. It is further collected at the office for homecare and administration services, in nursing homes where the elderly might be admitted through the data collection period, at the office of general practitioner, and at the municipal services of physiotherapist and occupational therapist. The selection of elderly receive help due to physical disabilities, and does not have cognitive failure. They are followed over a period of 1-1,5 year where they are in contact with different municipal health and care services, with a possibility for change and increase of help from family or public services.

Municipal health and care services is regulated through existing laws, political management and economic incentives. The daily practical work in different parts of municipal eldercare, is to a large degree influenced by national framework. They are also affected by local conditions, concerning allocation of resources, municipal priorities, organization of services, and the individuals working at each location. The families each possesses their individual life history, with conditions of possibilities and limitations, that in the end influence on how they adjust. This may also affect how care, tasks and responsibilities are divided between the elderly, family and the municipal services.
